Human Resource Projects

Overview

The Human Resource Projects (HRP) focus on two areas of need identified by the Agriculture and Food Council, and specific to human resource management in Alberta's agri-industry. These two areas include the development of a human resource information network—formally known as the Human Resource Information Exchange Centre (HRIEC) initiative, and the creation of business networks, formally known as the Alberta Agri-Business Network Project.

In pursuing these two priority areas, the Agriculture and Food Council continues its commitment to the Ag Summit & Agrivantage processes.

Soil to Sky

The Internet Portal

The Soil to Sky Internet portal is a product of the Human Resource Information Exchange Centre (HRIEC) project. The goal of the HRIEC project is to develop a centralized directory of agriculture and food-related HR and career information, including industry and institutional links, career profiling, and connections to career-building online tools.

This Internet portal will provide a clear and consistent picture of career opportunities in all aspects of the agriculture and food sector in Alberta and throughout Canada. Our users will include youth, students, and employees early in their careers aiming to use their skills and interests to build a challenging and rewarding career in this industry.

With the goal of attracting young job seekers toward an agriculture and food career, Soil to Sky provides career information and links to employers in a single location. This Web site was created in response to the worker shortage being experienced by employers in many sectors of Alberta’s economy, including agriculture and food.

Soil to Sky isn’t a job bank that advertises specific employment opportunities, and doesn’t duplicate the work of industry, government, and educational Web sites in the area of recruitment. By collecting existing information and links, Soil and Sky presents many useful resources in an accessible and searchable central location.

A career in agriculture and agribusiness never looked so good!

We invite you to visit the Soil to Sky portal, a user-ranked collection of links and career profiles for the agriculture and food industry. Are you ready for a new opportunity? Are you searching for a career idea that you may not have considered? Explore these career options, and discover how rewarding—and how diverse—a future in Alberta’s agriculture and food industry can be!

“With more and more hits on the site every day, interest in Soil to Sky seems to be growing throughout the community,” said Larry Malazdrewicz, Chair of the Agriculture and Food Council Action Team involved in the Internet portal’s development. “We’ve had tremendous initial support from our partners in sharing the link and spreading the word about this new tool.”

Alberta Agri-Business Network

The Alberta Agri-Business Network helps energetic agri-business people who are early in their career form networking groups, enabling them to share experiences and learn from one another in a confidential, supportive environment.

Two separate types of networks are being formed through the project: Production networks and business networks. Production networks focus on objectives related to livestock and/or cropping businesses, and include discussions about technology adoption, human resource management, and marketing opportunities. Business networks focus on the development of advanced business management skills required to manage increasingly diverse and complex agri-food operations.

Participation in a network will bring new information, perspective, and experience to participants, which may help them to capitalize on changes in the industry.

The Alberta Agri-Business Network is part of a pilot project aimed at addressing important human resource and management development issues identified in the Ag Summit and Agrivantage processes. The Agriculture and Food Council partnered with Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development in these processes.

What Will Network Groups Look Like?

Agri-food business owners, managers, and decision-makers with a willingness to lead and a desire to learn, including:

  • Producers and farm managers
  • Food processors
  • Agri-food retailers
  • Industry Suppliers
  • Businesses in the agriculture and agri-food sector

Groups will consist of five to nine peers who are not direct competitors. Members will be from a variety of industry segments and geographic areas when possible.

Role of Agriculture and Food Council:

  • Provide and fund a leader for each network group
  • Bring together network groups and speakers at a retreat in early 2007
  • Support the groups in forming relationships with networks in other geographic areas
    or sectors
  • Develop and maintain a Web-based resource database to support existing network
groups and train others to develop their own groups

Role of Network Members:

  • Commit to attending six half-day meetings a year, plus an annual retreat
  • Keep group discussions confidential
  • Provide feedback to the Council and group leader for project evaluation
